40 Degress About the Team

Peter Harding Biography
Peter started sailing at the age of 16, on a flotilla holiday in the Ionian with some schoolfriends. Having been hooked by the sport, he started race training at a sailing school in Southampton. Soon moving on to offshore racing on Blitz, an IOR 1 tonner. He also found time to enjoy the more relaxed side of sailing, with cruising in Greece and the Caribbean.

A chance meeting with one Chris Brown at a regatta in Ireland eventually led to a part share in the 40.7 'Fastwave 2'. This was followed by the highly successful DK 46 'Fidessa Fastwave', on which the crew regularly won races, including a formidable year in 2005, when the boat was crowned 1st overall in IRC. In February 2006, Peter acquired a TP52, the former 'Christabella'.

Having predominantly raced on fully-crewed boats, much of it around-the-cans, Peter was looking for a new challenge. Competing in the Class 40 represents a significant change in direction, as the racing is mainly long-distance offshore, and mostly double-handed. The 4,500 nautical mile 2007 Transat Jacques Vabre from France to Brasil was Peter's first transatlantic race. Since then, Peter has added two more transatlantic races to his name, the Quebec – St Malo race and the Solidaire du Chocolat race, as well as several thousand more miles of short-handed offshore racing on the first and second '40 Degrees'.

Peter’s long-term ambition is to race around the world.

Peter lives in Shaftesbury with his wife Susie, and three boys.
